St. Augustine by-the-Sea
About two months after our nephew, Lucas, passed away, the tragedy and finality of what happened pressed down on us. We felt paralyzed with great sadness and seemingly inconsolable grief, especially for my brother Rick and for Lucas’ brother Cameron and sister Rosalynn. Not knowing what to do and where to turn, our footsteps were naturally guided toward the church in prayer.
Thus began our pilgrimage to 100 churches.
St. Augustine church is still staffed by the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, the first Catholic order on the islands of Hawaii. It was erected by the military in 1898 during the Spanish-American war. It started as a small wooden structure with just a roof and open sides thatched with coconut fronds.
Today it is an active parish in Waikiki, and ministers to visitors from all over the world.
We remember how you loved us to your death, and still we celebrate for you are with us here; and we believe that we will see you when you come in your glory, Lord.
We remember, we celebrate, we believe.
