We were told that it is run by the order of La Salette priests. At first I thought "La Salette" is the same as "La Salle", but it is not. La Salette is a place in France where the Virgin Mary appeared to two boys in 1846. "La Salle" is an educational ministry inspired by St. Jean-Baptiste de La Salle, a French educator. The congregation, known as the de La Salle Christian Brothers, is a Catholic religious order of laymen (not priests). They run a number of private universities around the world including, of course, in Green Hills in the Philippines. The church was closed when we got there but I was able to take a photo of the inside through a glass pane. It sits atop a hill, overlooking Kealakekua Bay in Captain Cook. It was built in 1899 by Fr. John Veighe, a Belgian missionary. Without professional training and using housepaint on ordinary wood, he painted the frescoes along the church’s ceiling and walls, inspired by the Gothic designs of the cathedral at Burgos, Spain; but he added the sky and palm fronds for tropical flair. We took the public bus as close as we could to the church but had to Uber after that. Its strong “mana” is so welcoming to us, and a suspected “menehune” even played with us at the bus stop while we were waiting for the trolley to take us to where we can pick up another bus to get to the Manago Hotel for their famous pork chop (but that's another story for another blog). St. Michael the Archangel is the main church in Kona. It is the first Catholic church on the Big Island, founded in 1840. The present church was completed in 1850 under Father Joachim Merechel. He was buried inside the church in 1859. The church was within walking distance from the Royal Kona Resort where we stayed for the extra-long weekend. Stephen Alencastre. It underwent a major renovation in 1963 to what it stands today. It is an imposing church for a little flower. The church was designated a co-cathedral in 1985, together with Our Lady of Peace which has gotten too small for the growing Catholic population. I walked here from home one hot afternoon after work to make this pilgrimage. The church was closed so I took the photo of the interior through a glass pane. I also lit a candle offering to pray for the soul of Lucas. Catholics were persecuted and expelled from Hawaii from around 1829 to 1839, mostly at the behest of American protestant missionaries who had political clout and were favored by the monarchy. So, construction of the basilica did not formally begin until 1840, and it was completed, and the church was consecrated and dedicated to Our Lady of Peace in 1843. This is also where St. Damien of Molokai was ordained a priest. He came to Hawaii when he was not yet a full pledged priest. It is said that he has presided over mass here.
