St. Michael the Archangel

Kona on the Big Island is just about our favorite place ever in Hawaii (second only to the island of Oahu, of course). Its strong “mana” is so welcoming to us, and a suspected “menehune” even played with us at the bus stop while we were waiting for the trolley to take us to where we can pick up another bus to get to the Manago Hotel for their famous pork chop (but that's another story for another blog).

St. Michael the Archangel is the main church in Kona. It is the first Catholic church on the Big Island, founded in 1840. The present church was completed in 1850 under Father Joachim Merechel. He was buried inside the church in 1859.

The church was within walking distance from the Royal Kona Resort where we stayed for the extra-long weekend. We had a corner room with awesome views of the bay.

So we had to go to church and be grateful.
